Holiday Decorating Safety Tips

Decorating your home is often the best part of the holiday season. In today's day and age, most decorations have lights and require a cord to be plugged in. While pretty, these decorations do come with their own safety risks. When decorating your home, be sure to take a few safety tips into consideration.

  1. Inspection – Before hanging any lights on your home or tree, give them a quick inspection. Look over the cords for any damage, check for any broken light bulbs, and if both look okay then plug them in to see if they work.
  2. Outdoor – Decorations have escaped the inside of the house and have made their way outside. Be sure to only hang lights outside if they are designed for outdoor use. Otherwise you risk having some serious electrical problems during bad weather.
  3. Replacement – Light bulbs can break or burn out, but there's no need to throw away the whole strand of lights. Just make sure that the cord is unplugged before replacing the bulbs.
  4. Cords – Extension cords are frequently used when decorating for the holidays. Use cords that are long enough to reach an outlet, rather than connecting multiple cords together. Using too many in one outlet can cause the circuit to overload, .
  5. Timers – Never leave holiday lights on while you're asleep. If it's time for bed then it's time to shut the holiday display off. Set up timers for lights in case you forget to turn the lights off.
