4 Important Tips for Your Heating System

The temperatures are starting to drop and everyone is racing to their thermostats. As you turn on your heating system for the first time, there are some things you should know to help keep it running efficiently.

  1. Doors Wide Open – In order to save on heating costs some homeowners will choose to block off the vents and doors in some rooms. While closed off rooms will cool down, warm air from other rooms will naturally find its way into these cooler, closed off rooms. In reality, you will be paying just as much to warm your home, but with added wear and tear to your unit.
  2. Cranking the Heat – Let's say you go away for a weekend and turn down the heat in order to save some money. Make sure that when you return on Sunday night you don't set the thermostat too high to try and heat up your home faster. A furnace will deliver heat at one speed, so just set the desired temperature and wait patiently.
  3. New Air Filter – Your furnace's air filter should be changed roughly every month or two. Leaving in an old air filter for too long will impede the flow of air due to a buildup of dust and debris. This will lower your indoor air quality and add wear and tear to your unit.
  4. Know When It Goes – There are a few warning signs that will occur when your old furnace has overstayed its welcome. When all of the rooms are different temperatures, unusual sounds are heard throughout the ducts and near the furnace itself, and heating bills hit all-time highs, it might be time for a new furnace. Most of these warning signs will start to develop after roughly 15 years.
