5 Tips to Prevent Disastrous Plumbing Emergencies

Plumbing emergencies always happen you least expect them and the damage ends up being worse than it looks. When a plumbing emergency occurs, you have to think quickly on your feet to prevent the damage from becoming too disastrous. Here are a few quick tips that can help save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in repairs.

  1. Electrical Nightmare – Basement flooding happens! However, if you see that your basement is slowly filling up with water, do not go down those stairs. If the water is touching an electrical outlet or live wire, you and your home could be in danger. If you can, head to the electrical panel and shut off those circuits (or the whole house to be safe).
  2. Washer Overflow – When your dishwasher or washing machines overflows and starts to leak everywhere, grab as many towels as you can. Build a wall of towels around the washer to keep the water from spreading. You're already paying for washer repair; don't get stuck with water damage removal as well.
  3. Prevent Frozen Pipes – If you feel like the pipes in your garage or basement are going to freeze on an unusually cold night, leave your sink taps open. This will allow a small, but constant flow of water to trickle out.
  4. De-Freezing Frozen Pipes – If your pipes do freeze on an extremely cold night, try to defrost them as quickly as possible. Grab a hair dryer and begin blowing hot air on the pipes. Start on the side closest to the tap so the water has a place to drain.
  5. Shutoff Valve – When a plumbing disaster strikes, water can begin to pour out of the piping into your home. To avoid having your home flood, it's important to know exactly where the main water shutoff valve is. Being able to shut off your home's water will save you from thousands of dollars in repairs when a pipe bursts.
