5 Things to Keep Out of the Toilet

5 Things to Keep Out of the Toilet

Using the toilet is something you’re going to be doing multiple times per day until the end of time. Flushing the toilet isn't a problem, however, what goes down the toilet is a whole other story. Before you go ahead and push down on that lever, make sure these five things aren't in the bowl.

  1. "Flushable" Wipes – Disposable wipes for adults mimic the softness and comfort that you experienced as a child with baby wipes. While these wipes are marketed as "flushable", they're far from it. These disposable wipes can't break down the way toilet paper can, which cause clogs, blockages, and in some cases - serious sewer line problems.
  2. Cotton Swabs – A cotton swab is merely a fluffy piece of cotton attached to a paper stick. Even though it looks like it would naturally break down after being soak in water, it doesn't. Flushing cotton swabs after cleaning your ears can cause blockages near the bending of the pipes.
  3. Paper Towels – This paper product is a close cousin to toilet paper, but that doesn't mean it can be flushed. Unlike toilet paper, paper towels aren't designed to break down when soaked. Instead, they're designed to absorb as much liquid as they can to clean up spills.
  4. Cigarettes – First things first, you should never smoke inside because it can drastically lower the indoor air quality. On top of that, you should never flush the butts of cigarettes, as the chemicals within can contaminate the water supply. To end on an even lower note, you're going to end up wasting a gallon or more of water just to flush a tiny cigarette butt!
  5. Bandages – When you get a cut or scrape, bandages are there to keep your weakened flesh protected. Since most are made with non-biodegradable plastic, they should never be flushed down the toilet. Not only is this plastic awful for the environment, but there's a good chance that the bandage will get caught in your sewer line.
