Do This Before Installing That New Bathroom Fixture

Prepare By Planning

If you're looking to spend as little money as possible, save the most amount of time, and avoid hitting unforeseen roadblocks, make a plan of what you're trying to accomplish. Check to see if you need any permits for larger plumbing projects, create a blueprint of the room so you know where existing plumbing is, and draw up some bathroom design plans if you plan to relocate any fixtures. Having plans in place will also be good to show the plumber so they can assess what is feasible and what can be done more efficiently.

Gather Your Supplies

First and foremost, plumbing installations should be left to professional plumbers to avoid any mishaps. However, small projects like replacing a toilet can be done by the homeowner (if you're semi-experienced and confident in yourself). Research all of the tools you will need to get the job done and make sure you have them all readily available before the job begins. You should also have the new fixture and supporting materials like plumber's putty, caulking, nails, etc. in your possession, no matter who completes the installation. You don’t want to be halfway through the installation and realize you're missing parts or materials.

Inspect the Current Plumbing

Another reason you should have a professional plumber replace your fixtures is because a plumbing inspection should be completed during this process. A plumber will be able to assess the condition of your current plumbing and look for any corrosion, leaks, or pieces that need replacement before new fixtures are installed. Older houses that still have galvanized steel pipes might also want to consider switching over to copper, PVC, or PEX piping before installing the new fixtures.

New bathroom fixtures can make an older bathroom more functional and better looking, but make sure you do a few things before switching out the old with the new.
