How to Light a Room Without Windows

Not every room in your home is going to have floor-to-ceiling windows (even though you wish this was the case).

There are going to be areas in the house (and sometimes even entire rooms) without any windows at all. Naturally, these areas and rooms are going to be darker due to the lack of natural light.

In order to properly light a room without windows, you should keep a few things in mind.

1) Make the Main Source Big Enough

Every room needs a main source of light to illuminate most of the area. When deciding on how big of a light fixture to purchase, do some quick math first. Take the dimensions of the room and add them together, then convert the number of feet to inches.

For example, if your room is 10 feet by 10 feet, add these together and you will have 20 feet. Then convert 20 feet to 20 inches — this is how big the diameter of the main light fixture should be.

2) Add Task Lighting

Once you have your main source of light established, take the time to figure out what you’re going to be doing in this room and add task lighting accordingly. Task lighting is a series of smaller light sources that are placed strategically throughout the room to allow light to help you see in specific scenarios.

If you read on the couch often, place a floor or table lamp on either side of the couch. If you are a fan of cooking, install under-cabinet lighting to help illuminate your countertops. This additional lighting will help make the room more functional.

3) Remember the Corners

Rooms without much natural light will rely heavily on the main light fixture to illuminate the room. Because one light source cannot illuminate the entire room perfectly, there are going to be areas of the room much darker than other (especially if there is no task lighting here as well).

The corners of rooms are often the darkest areas and can make a room look smaller. To help illuminate the corners of the room, consider placing floor lamps here. To make the room feel bigger, look toward the next step…

4) Add Mirrors

Rooms without windows can feel cramped and small, but there’s an easy way to make rooms feel bigger than they are. Add mirrors throughout the room to allow light to bounce off the reflections, as well as giving the impression of there being “more” to the room due to the reflection.

A long, standing mirror leaning against the wall in the corner of the room, a mirror hanging on the wall, or reflective decor scattered throughout the room can all help make any room feel bigger and brighter than it really is.

Adding windows to a room can be very expensive (and sometimes not possible), but there are ways around this to help achieve a brighter home!
