Types of Home Heating Systems to Consider

While we want to be comfy and cozy in cold weather, most of us must consider financial needs when choosing a home heating system. Value to performance is the key. Consider the pros and cons of the following major home heating systems to meet your needs.

Furnaces

Furnaces are a common home heating system and can be economical when using propane or natural gas. Without zone heating, the temperature can't be adjusted for individual rooms, but a properly maintained system should provide even warmth throughout your home.

Boilers

Newer models boilers are 80% efficient and can be also used indirectly as a hot water source. Since they don't use ducts, they circulate less dust and help your indoor air quality. However, boilers can't double for cooling, so you'll need a second system to keep comfortable during the summer.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are great for moderate climates and have relatively low operating costs. The one catch is that the lifespan of a heat pump can be shorter than that of a furnace so it will need more maintenance to last.

Space Heaters

Space heaters are portable, good for small spaces, and inexpensive to purchase. The downside is that they are costly to operate, especially if electricity is expensive in your area and aren't always the safest heating option.

Baseboard Heaters

Baseboard heaters are inexpensive to install and each room's unit has its own thermostat for individualized comfort. However, you need to operate them safely as the can be a fire hazard if they come in contact with flammable objects.
