When it becomes unbearably hot out, you just want to sit inside of your home with the AC on.
While you can certainly do this, that doesn’t guarantee that your home will be cool. There are things that can cause it to stay warm and prevent you from cooling it properly.
Luckily, we’ve got the inside scoop on how to keep it cool this summer!
(Scoop. Now we’re thinking about ice cream… great!)
1) Keep the Sun OUT
Have you ever sat by the window on a hot day (even with the air conditioner on)?
The sunlight pouring through the window is warm and you feel yourself starting to sweat. Just because the windows are closed doesn’t mean the heat from the intense rays of sunshine won’t heat up your home.
To keep your home cooler during the day, keep curtains or blinds closed on any sun-facing windows. Remember — select windows see sunlight at select times during the day.
2) Upgrade Your Thermostat
The last thing you want is to come home to a warm house. You also don’t want to open your energy bill and see a dollar sign that will leave your jaw on the floor.
Do you want a happy medium?
Upgrade to a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to set times for your cooling system to turn on and off throughout the day and night.
- Do you leave for work at 8:00 AM? Set your thermostat to a higher temperature for 8:00 AM.
- Do you come home from work at 5:30 PM? Set your thermostat to a cooler temperature for 4:30 PM.
3) Switch to a Ductless Mini-Split
Are you still using window AC units to cool your home? Not only do these units unevenly cool your home, they’re expensive to run because you either rely on a single unit to cool the entire home OR you have multiple window units you need to power.
A ductless mini-split system is your best option if you’re looking to upgrade. These units do NOT require the installation of ductwork and your energy bills will see a nice reduction, as this system is one of the most energy efficient options.
4) Take the Cooking Outside
Grab a plate of burgers and head out to the grill! You should be taking advantage of this nice weather since the Pennsylvania weather only allows you to enjoy the warmth for a handful of months.
Not only is grilling an opportunity to invite friends over to have some good and easy food, but it prevents your home from heating up too much. The last thing you want to do is turn on the oven or stove on a warm day — your home will begin to heat up within minutes!
5) Take Care of Your System
No matter the type of cooling system you have, the most important thing you can do is to provide it with the necessary maintenance it needs.
Provide it with an annual maintenance, change the air filters every month or so, clean the unit (if it’s outside), contact your local HVAC technician if you notice it’s not cooling your home as good as it used to, etc.
If you take care of your system, it will take care of you in return — by providing you with gloriously cool air!
The last thing you want is to live in a home that’s just as warm inside as it is outside.
