Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re on Vacation

Summertime is the most popular season to head off on vacation, and with good reason. The days are longer, the weather is nicer, and the kids are home from school. As you’re planning what outfits you’ll wear during your trip, and what activities you’ll participate in, you should also start considering how you’re going to keep your home safe while you’re away.

Add Light Timers

A main concern that homeowners have when they go on vacation is that their home will be more vulnerable to intruders if it looks like no one is there. That’s where light timers come in. You can plug these simple devices into lamps and other lighting fixtures around your home so they sporadically turn on and make it appear as if people are home.

Don’t Close Up Shop

You may be tempted to close all the curtains and blinds so no one can peer inside your home while you’re not there, but, especially if you often leave the curtains open, this will seem suspicious. However you normally keep your home, leave it that way when you go on vacation.

Lock Everything

Although this may seem like common sense, it’s important to ensure you lock every possible entryway of your home. This includes windows, the garage door, and any deadbolts that you have. Doing so can help ensure that no one has an easy time getting inside your home.

Take Care of Mail

Especially if you’re going on a long trip, it’s essential to make sure that your mail doesn’t pile up and signal that no one is home to get it. Either arrange with your post office to stop mail temporarily from coming to your home, or ask a neighbor or nearby friend to collect the mail for you each day.
