Should I Turn Off My AC to Save Money?

With the rising costs of living, we wouldn’t be surprised if you were trying every which way to save a few dollars here and there. When it comes to using your AC, the summer can add a good chunk of change to your monthly utility bill.

When that happens, you may think about turning your AC off when you aren’t home in order to save a little bit of money. Well, we’re here to tell you that may not be the best idea. Here’s why:

You’ll Force Your AC to Work Harder and Longer

Your AC and thermostat work together to create a cohesive, comfortable temperature throughout your home by cycling on to cool the air whenever they detect the temperature has changed from your desired degree. Normally, the AC will cycle on every so often to maintain that desired temperature.

Now, if you decide to turn your system completely off while you’re not home, when you do turn it back on, the temperature in your home will have drastically changed. This will force your air conditioner to run for much longer and work much harder than it normally does in order to bring the temperature back to what you’ve set your thermostat to.

All that extra effort will actually cost you more money on your utility bill than you would have spent if you had just let your unit run as it normally does.

So What Do You Do?

The best thing to do in order to limit how often your AC cycles on is to install a programmable thermostat. You will be able to set specific times and temperatures you want you AC to run at in order to save a little money. For example, you can let the temperature rise a little bit during the workday when no one is home so your AC doesn’t cycle on as much, then set another temperature for the time everyone gets home.
