How to Avoid a High Water Bill During the Holidays

The holidays are a time of merriment, fun festivities, and family gatherings. During this season, it’s not uncommon to have visitors stay at your home and host holiday parties. The problem comes in when all that holiday fun puts you at risk for receiving a sky-high water bill at the end of the month.

Not to worry! There are several things you can do to keep the holiday fun high and your water bill low.

Set a Time Limit on Showers

Especially, if you have guests visiting, there’s going to be a lot of bathroom traffic, mainly in and out of the shower. Ask everyone to set a ten-minute time limit on their showers in an effort to consume less water. You and your guests will still be able to get all your shower tasks done — you’ll just have to skip the daydreaming and karaoke time.

Wash Carefully

After a big holiday meal, don’t waste water by washing all the dishes by hand. Instead, fill your sink slightly with water and simply scrub off any stuck-on food or other gunk from the dishes. Once they’re free of food, put the dishes in your dishwasher. And make sure to only run the unit when it’s full!

The same goes for doing laundry. Make sure to only wash full loads of laundry, and, if your washing machine has a setting for it, use energy-saver or high-efficiency mood, as these use less water.

Invest in Low-Flow Fixtures

Unlike traditional faucets and showerheads, low flow fixtures reduce the amount of water that is expelled per minute. This can greatly reduce the amount of water you use when doing tasks around the tasks.
