5 Tips To Prepare Your AC for Summer

Summer in Lancaster will be here before you know it, so it’s important that you prepare your AC system for the hot weather. The last thing you want is to be hit with the first hot day of the season without remembering to make sure your air conditioner is ready to go.

Following are some tips from our HVAC technicians to ensure that your system is ready to cool down your home by the time the heat rolls around.

Check Your Thermostat

Your thermostat is the device that controls the air and AC unit, so it’s important to ensure it’s working properly. Check to make sure all the functions are working and that it’s connected to the wall properly. This may also be the time you consider switching to a smart thermostat if you had trouble evenly cooling off your home last summer. A smart thermostat can more evenly heat all rooms and levels of your home in addition to saving you money.

Clean or Replace Filters

This is a very important step that a lot of people forget about, and failing to do so can have a huge impact on the efficiency of your AC unit. If an air filter has dust, dirt, debris, or other particles on it, not only will those particles be circulating in the air, but there will also be restricted airflow. This will make your AC work harder to cool down your home, therefore increasing your utility bills.

Clean the Condenser Coils

Having a clean inner fan and condenser coils mean your AC unit will work much better. Your AC’s condenser unit will most likely be outdoors, and it looks like a large metal box with a fan inside. If it was uncovered for the winter, now is the time to uncover it. If it was uncovered, there’s more likely to be an accumulation of debris, such as dirt, leaves, branches, or anything else that got swept up in the unit.

Before the unit is turned on for the season, you’ll need to ensure all of that debris is removed. You or a technician will need to check inside the box to ensure that there is no debris clogging the coils. If there is, it will need to be cleaned so your AC can work efficiently.

Check the Coolant Lines

Although you may have never heard of it or seen it, a coolant line is what runs from the outdoor condenser unit to your house, where they connect to what’s known as an air handler. In order for your AC to work properly, these lines need to be insulated and working correctly. If they aren’t insulated or are ripped or damaged in any way, they’ll need to be repaired before switching on your air.
