Detecting Water Leaks In Your Home

Detecting Water Leaks In Your Home

A water leak in your home can lead to persistent odors, foundational and structural damages, and insect infestations. Locating the source of your leak is essential; however, this can sometimes require informed investigation strategies, as leaks can range in size and severity.

Yet, even tiny pinhole leaks can result in thousands of dollars in damage and a compromised home. Here are some tips on detecting water leaks in your home:

Check Your Appliance & Fixtures

Do a thorough inspection of all your appliances and home fixtures for leaks in your plumbing hoses and pipes. This includes your laundry machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, and ice machines. Any appliance with a water line should be checked!

Monitor Your Water Meter

Don’t see any visible leaks? You can check your home for leaks that do not appear to the naked eye by completing these steps:

· Turn off all of your faucets and appliances in your home.

· Take note of the numbers displayed on your water meter.

· After an hour, check your water meter. If the numbers have changed since you turned off all of your water fixtures, you have a hidden leak.

Try the Dye Test on Your Toilet

Put a few drops of kitchen food dye into the tank of each toilet in your home. If the dye travels to your toilet bowls, your rubber stopper mechanism is malfunctioning.

Check for Discoloration or Dampness on Walls and Ceilings

If you see stains on your ceiling or walls, feel warm spots on your floors, or notice mold growth in your home, you may have a leak. Contact a professional plumber for repairs to avoid further property damages.

Use Leak Detector Equipment

You can purchase a leak detection device that measures moisture levels! This detector will sound an alarm at the first sign of moisture. However, these devices are no match for trained professionals.
