Reducing Energy Consumption & Costs at Home

Now more than ever, families are looking for ways to trim their budgets by cutting costs at home. Reducing your energy consumption in your Lancaster home is one of the easiest and fastest ways to lower your utility bills!

Here are three things you can do right now that will help lower your electric bill and your heating and cooling costs.

#1. Switch Out Your Lightbulbs

Lighting in your home can account for up to 20 to 25 percent of your energy costs. However, how can you cut energy consumption when your stay-at-home orders have increased your electrical use? Well, what if we told you it is possible to save money while your lights are on? It is! Simply replace your less energy-efficient incandescent or fluorescent bulbs with LED lightbulbs.

LED Benefits:

  • Require less electricity

  • Burn cooler

  • Have a lifespan of 25,000-35,000 hours

  • Last 25 to 35 times longer than incandescent lights

#2. Eliminate Energy Vampires

You might not know it, but you likely have energy vampires lurking in your home, sucking up your electricity, responsible for 15 percent of your electric costs. Energy vampires are appliances or items that still consume electricity, even when not in use. Stop energy vampires by unplugging these items:

  • Phone, laptop, and tablet chargers

  • Small appliances, like coffee makers, toasters, and hair dryers

  • Electronic devices, like video game systems, computers, and televisions

#3. Adjust the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Raising the temperature on your thermostat will save you money. When using your air conditioner, increase the temperature when you are not home. With summer just around the corner, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat at 78 degrees when you are home; however, we understand this may not achieve your desired climate, so simply try and do this when you can!

Once your normal work schedule resumes, raise your temperature four or more degrees while you are away, for eight or more hours. You will be rewarded with up to 10 percent savings on your cooling costs each month. Better yet, upgrade to a programmable thermostat and let the technology optimize your temperature for you!
