Spring HVAC Checklist

While the high temperature and sweaty days of summer have not hit us just yet, springtime has arrived and begun to spread its new life and glimpses of warmth on us all.

These months of spring offer beginnings, pockets of sunshine, and nature coming to life again. As we head through this time of change and move into the air conditioning season, there are some things homeowners must do in order to help their homes transition out of the harsh winter, including giving your HVAC system some attention.

We’ve put together a list of tasks for you to prepare your cooling system for the months ahead.

Do It Yourself

While not every item on your HVAC checklist should be done without the help of a professional technician, there are a few things you can do on your own.

Indoors

One of the most important parts of taking care of your HVAC system is keeping it clean. You can easily find cleaning spray for your system at a local hardware store, as well as cleaning cloths and small brushes to get the hard-to-reach areas.

Evaporator Coil

Your evaporator coil is typically located behind a door above the blower motor. Use a soft brush to remove dust from the fin-like sheets of metal on the sides and spray with the cleaning solution you purchased. Allow the spray to sit for a few minutes before wiping the surface down.

Evaporator Drain

Next, take care of your evaporator drain. This is underneath the evaporator coil and serves as a draining solution for any condensation build-up from excess humidity. Gently clean the drain by pouring distilled white vinegar down it to break up any potential mold or algae blockages.

Clean House

Now that you have cleaned the interior of your unit, it’s time to clean out the other components of your system and other items around the house. They don’t call it spring cleaning for nothing!

If you have ceiling fans, dust off the blades and wipe them down. Get your kids in on the cleaning fun and have them help you locate every vent in the home to dust and wipe down too!

Air Filters

Your air filters are responsible for filtering out unwanted contaminants from your home’s air. These contaminants include:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Pet Dander
  • Mold Spores

Changing your air filters every three months lowers the chance of clogging, which makes your HVAC unit work even harder, thereby forcing the pollutants into the air. Changing your air filters is simple and a great way to improve your indoor air quality. Bonus: it helps keep all those spring-time allergens out of your home!

Outdoors

Use the bit of springtime sun we have to get outside and prep your outdoor unit for the season.

Clean It Up

Clear away any debris, leaves, or any other things that may have piled up around your base unit during the fall and winter months. Remove the outer cover of the grate and use your garden hose to spray out any gunk that has accumulated. You can also use the coil cleaner you used inside to add more shine.

Call A Professional

HVAC technicians go through extensive and specific training in order to properly maintain your unit. Therefore, there are some repairs and maintenance work that should be done only by these trained professionals.

Before the busy season kicks off, call Lancaster Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical to schedule a system check. During your appointment, our technician will:

  • Check refrigerant levels
  • Inspect electrical connections, drains, pumps, and compressors
  • Calibrate thermostat
  • And more!

You can trust that our team will leave no condenser unturned. By performing regular maintenance check-ups, we can stop potential problems in their tracks and avoid bigger problems down the line that will run you a hefty bill! We want to ensure that your HVAC unit has a full and long life keeping your family comfortable.
