Why Your Furnace is Blowing Cold Air

A furnace that is blowing cold air is one of the biggest problems that you can have in the middle of winter. Furnaces are made up of multiple parts and all of them have to be in working order for heat to be produced. Troubleshoot your furnace to see which part is causing it to blow cold air.

Fuel System
When the fuel system is not sending out its respective fuel then the furnace will only blow cold air. Whether you own an oil, gas, or electric furnace they should each be fueled up or plugged in. Make sure that all of the lines and filters are cleared for oil and gas furnaces, and that the breaker is turned on for electric furnaces.

Furnace Filters
An old filter can lower the efficiency of your home furnace. When the filter is extremely clogged it can actually shut off the burner and prevent the unit from working altogether. Remember to replace the filters monthly as a part of your routine maintenance.

Restart
Many newer furnaces can be controlled via a computer and have the possibility of malfunctioning from time to time. Sometimes all you need to do is give them a quick reboot. Turn the furnace off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This will restart the system and hopefully solve your problem.

Ductwork
Your home’s ductwork is what gets the warm air from the furnace to the rooms in your home. When the ductwork system has damage and air leaks, the warm air can escape. If there are many rips, holes, and if the ducts become disconnected, all of the warm air can escape and only cool air will be pushed through your air ducts into each room.
