Chandelier Installation—A Comprehensive Guide

A chandelier is a true statement piece! However, adding this dramatic fixture takes some finesse. Are you up to the job? With Lancaster Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Electrical, you will not only be up to the task, but you’ll be ready for it. Once you have selected the size and design of your choice, follow these guidelines for light fixture installation:

Set-Up Instructions:

  1. Have your materials ready: a ladder, tape measure, and screwdriver. And, of course, any additional tools outlined in your directions.

  2. Select the exact spot you want the chandelier to hang from.

  3. Make sure to disconnect your power. You do not want to risk electrocution.

  4. Loosen the screws on your current light fixture by turning them in a counterclockwise direction, and carefully separate your fixture from the wires. Replace the mounting bracket with the new one. This bracket should come with your chandelier.

  5. Take time to read the chandelier manual before you begin the installation. Pre-assemble the chandelier by threading the wire through the chain.

  6. Make sure you match the neutral wire with a similarly colored one in the fixture.

  7. Twist the two ends of the wires clockwise, and fasten a wire nut on the end, and screw it, clockwise too. Repeat this procedure with the protective green wires, securing these with a nut as well.

You are now ready to install your new chandelier. Ensure the bulbs are not fixed when you mount it. Once you have screwed the fixture in position, install the bulbs and turn your power back on to confirm your installation was successful! You are now ready to face a brighter future!

Safety Points to Note

  1. The weight of your chandelier may require extra support. If your fixture weighs over 50 pounds, a fan brace should be used to secure its weight during installation.

  2. Familiarize yourself with wiring to avoid damaging your light fixture.

  3. Make sure to hang the chandelier using the chains. Using the wires to hang it up is a fire hazard!

A word of caution, unlike other DIYs, working with electricity requires extra caution and some know-how to avoid a fire hazard. If you are not sure you measure up to the task, spend a little more and have an electrician do the installation.
