How to Replace Your Furnace Belt
The middle of winter is the worst time for your furnace to break down. Inside of that forced air furnace, lies an air blower and motor that uses a belt to help it operate. If this furnace belt breaks, say goodbye to your heat until it is replaced.
Step 1: First things first, turn off the power to your furnace. Trying to replace a part on this fixture while it is on can be extremely dangerous. Check to see if the power is off by turning the fan on via the thermostat. Proceed to open up the front access panel of the furnace.
Step 2: Grab a socket and begin loosening the motor from the furnace. Push the loosened motor towards the blower in order to allow removal of the furnace belt.
Step 3: With the new furnace belt, place one side over the motor pulley and the other over the blower pulley.
Step 4: Pull the motor back out to its original position and begin tightening it back onto the furnace. Do not over tighten the motor mounts; allow for a half of an inch to an inch of wiggle room.
Step 5: Close the front access panel, reconnect the power, and turn on the furnace.
Remember: Always keep an extra furnace belt nearby in case the current one breaks in the middle of the night.
