What You Need to Be Doing to Prevent Mold From Growing
The last thing you want to have in your home is the ugly, dangerous, and world famous mold.
Fortunately, there are things you can actively do to avoid having mold growing inside of your home.
Here are a few places where mold can grow, what to look for, and what to do in order to prevent mold from rearing its ugly head.
1) Pay Attention to Your Plumbing
One of the most common areas in your home to find mold is next to a plumbing appliance, fixture, or pipe.
Leaks can occur at any moment, water can fall to the floor in between uses, and condensation can build up on your plumbing depending on the temperature and humidity levels of your home.
On a weekly basis, you should be taking a quick look at each of your plumbing appliances, fixtures, and pipes to make sure there’s no water leaking from them or pooling around them. You should also clean up any spills as soon as they happen.
2) Rain, Rain Go Away
Have you recently noticed small brown spots on your ceilings or walls? These brown water stains are a common sign that there’s a leak or an abundance of moisture in your home. If you see these spots on your ceiling or upper walls, you may want to head up to the attic for a quick inspection.
Once you’re in the attic, you want to keep an eye out for any mold, water damage, or an actual leak itself. Check on the underside of your roof and behind the insulation.
If you happen to find mold, water damage, or even a hole in the structure that leads to the outside, then you most likely have a roof leak that needs to be repaired. Attic and roof inspections should be a monthly thing you do in order to ensure there are no roof leaks, thus preventing water damage and mold growth.
3) Ductwork
There’s a place in your home that can breed mold, but it’s less obvious than anywhere else in your home. The ductwork of your HVAC system can house mold if you do not provide it with the proper maintenance.
How can you tell if your ductwork has mold on its surfaces?
While the air vents are blowing out air, put your nose up against it and smell for a foul odor. It’s also safe to assume there’s mold within the ductwork if you haven’t had them professionally cleaned or serviced in the last few years.
This can be a dangerous place to have mold, as the air that comes out of the vents is what you breathe in and it will have come in contact with the mold. To keep mold from growing here, have your ductwork professionally cleaned and inspected every few years.
