What You Need to Do Before Winter Arrives
You’ve all seen the Facebook posts and memes that say “Winter is Coming.” While these might be funny references to your favorite TV show, the message is nonetheless true. Winter will be here very shortly and there are things you need to do in your home before they become huge problems (and bills) for you to deal with.
Winterize Your Faucets
The days of watering your garden and washing your car are long gone, so it’s time to put the hose away. Disconnect the hose from your outdoor faucet and begin neatly wrapping your hose up (excess water should drain out so watch your feet). Next, head to the shutoff valve for your outdoor faucets and shut them off. Each faucet should also be equipped with an insulated cover to reduce the risk of any pipes freezing.
Seal the Envelope
Living in a home with cracks and gaps spread throughout the house will cause warm air to escape, resulting in your heating system working longer and harder to heat your home – talk about a waste of money! Purchase the proper exterior caulk and begin sealing as many of these crack and gaps as you can find. Common areas include the trim of door and window frames, areas where pipes and electrical enters the house, and on the siding of your home.
Service Your Heating System
The last thing you want to experience is a broken heating system in the middle of below freezing temperatures. The perfect way to avoid sitting in the cold and paying costly repair bills is to have your heating system serviced now. An inexpensive and preventative service will allow you to have broken parts repaired and the unit tuned up for a smooth heating season.
