When Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?
Do you remember the last time the ductwork in your home was cleaned? If you’re not sure of the answer, then you might be overdue. While the EPA doesn’t have a concrete answer of how often this should be done, there are signs that will let you know when the time is right.
When You Can See Mold
Grab a flashlight and shine it into each one of your air vents. If you can easily see mold, you are long overdue for a cleaning. The presence of mold doesn’t just mean your ducts haven’t been cleaned in a while, it also means there is a moisture problem that needs to be corrected. Since breathing in mold spores can negatively affect your health, a cleaning should be scheduled immediately upon its discovery.
When You Have Unexpected House Guests
Hearing the tiny pitter patter of small vermin within your air ducts is an obvious sign that your ductwork needs some tender loving care. This means there are openings and air leaks that need to be identified and repaired, as well as the possibility of an infestation or other dead vermin stuck in the ductwork. Talk about a dirty (and smelly) situation!
When You Can See Dust
Over time, dust will accumulate on the metallic surfaces of your ductwork – hey, it happens! But when too much time goes by, too thick of a layer of dust can form. Not only will you see it when you shine a light into your air vents, but you’ll see dust particles floating up and out of those vents. The more dust there is, the higher the risk of a lower indoor air quality.
