Why Hot Showers Are Bad for Your Bathroom
After a long day at work, watching over the kids, and exercising, nothing feels better than taking a hot shower (or bath). While the hot water will feel great on your skin, it can actually hurt your bathroom. Why? One word – steam.
How Steam Can Affect Your Bathroom
Hot showers and baths will produce a TON of steam that can fill up any bathroom. This steam will cling to the walls, ceiling, and floors – resulting in moisture damage and eventual mold growth (Yuck!).
Not only will this make your bathroom unsightly, it can be expensive to fix and remove. Before drawing a hot bath or taking a shower, make sure you practice the prevention methods listed below.
How to Remove Steam From Your Bathroom
- Bathroom Fan – Every full bathroom in your home should have a ventilation fan installed in the ceiling or wall. This fan should be turned on before any hot water is dispensed and should remain on at least 10 minutes after you exit the bathroom.
- Open Up – Before you head into the shower, crack the door or open up the window to allow some steam to escape. For those who wouldn’t dare to shower with either of these opened (thanks a lot scary movies), open them up as soon as you exit the shower.
- Dehumidifier – Place a small dehumidifier in the bathroom and switch it on whenever the shower is turned on. It will do a great job of removing moisture from the air as the steam tries to pile up. Remember to empty the tray filled with water after you turn the dehumidifier off.
