3 Home Lighting Mistakes You’re Probably Making
Just because the house you bought came with its existing lighting doesn’t mean it’s the best it can be. You want to make sure that your home’s lighting is perfect so you’re never left in the dark (or in a bad mood because of off-lighting). Here’s a few common lighting mistakes many homeowners continue to make.
Mistake #1: Where Are the Layers? When a room has a single light source (usually overhead lighting), you’re already doing something wrong. Each room has to have multiple layers of lighting in order to add functionality and character. Yes, overhead lighting can be installed in every room, but what about floor lamps, table lamps, accent lights, and wall sconces? These other light sources can help you read in bed, highlight a specific area of the room, and give you a choice of how much light you want in the room at one time.
Mistake #2: Where Are the Dimmer Switches? Most of the rooms in your house have overhead lighting – okay, that’s fine. Do these light fixtures have dimmer switches installed so you can control how much overhead light there is? After adding in multiple layers of lighting, you don’t want to keep your overhead lighting on the maximum setting. Dimming this light fixture can make the other lighting more noticeable while taking it easy on your eyes.
Mistake #3: Where Are the LEDs? Other than the lights with dimmer switches installed, every light bulb in your home better be an LED (or CFL). Yes, these bulbs do cost more at the store, but you’ll notice a significant decrease in your monthly energy bills. LED light bulbs will also last a longer time than traditional bulbs, so you’ll spend less money replacing them.
Having a home that’s improperly lit can make your time spent inside less enjoyable than it should be.
