Do You Hear These Spooky Sounds Coming From Your Radiator?
Do you stay up at night listening to loud screeches and banging noises? Was your home built during or before the 1940s? Before you go ahead and blame it on a ghost from the 1800s, you may want to point the finger at your steam radiator.
Stop the Bumps in the Night
Every loud bang you hear isn’t a ghost trying to get your attention (although you never know)! These loud banging noises are usually caused by steam that has been condensed back into liquid form. When this water goes through the pipes and hits an elbow or joint – cue the banging noises. An easy fix for this is to tilt the radiator toward the boiler so water can’t settle in it, otherwise, call your local plumber.
Come to a Screeching Halt
When you hear loud screeches and squeaks, this isn’t a banshee visiting your home. This noise usually means you need to replace the air vent. When swapping out the old air vent with a new one, be sure not to cross their threads or over tighten. This could cause damage to the new air vent and the radiator itself. To avoid damaging this older heating system, opt for a professional to perform this repair for you.
