Holiday Electrical Hazards

Since you’ll almost certainly have more lights plugged in during the holidays, you need to be more aware of the potential hazards that come with them. Here are some of the more common hazards you might come across this year.

Using the Wrong Lights Outdoors

Hanging lights outside your home might be fun, but you need to make sure to only use waterproof lights outdoors. If you aren’t sure if the new lights you bought are safe for the outside of your house, look at the box. It should be clearly marked.

Using Damaged Electrical Cords

You should never use damaged electrical cords in your home for any reason. This includes cords with stripped insulation, cords that are frayed, or anything else that looks like it should be thrown away. This is especially important during the holidays since you’ll probably be using extension cords that you haven’t touched since last December.

Overloading Outlets

Overloaded electrical outlets can lead to anything from a power outage to a house fire. If you’re going to plug in a ton of lights and other decorations this year, either space them out across several outlets or invest in some good power strips, especially those with surge protectors.

Keeping Your Christmas Tree Lit

If you have a real Christmas tree in your home, be sure to unplug any lights you have on it before you leave the house or go to bed. Trees tend to dry out and become flammable, especially if you forget to water them regularly.

Remember that Less is More

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, remember that less is more, especially if you’re decorating with lights. Pay close attention to what you have plugged in and where your lights are, and scale everything back if you’re worried about things getting too dangerous.
