How to Keep Hair From Clogging the Drain
Clogged drains do occur from time to time, but they are completely preventable. One of the biggest culprits for causing blockages within your plumbing is an excessive amount of hair. In order to keep hair from clogging the drains in your bathroom, keep these tips in mind.
Hair Catcher For only a couple of dollars, you can purchase a hair catcher to install on top of your shower drain. This small and inexpensive piece slips on top of the drain and will catch the hair and other debris that attempts to go down the drain. Once a significant buildup of debris is present, remove the catcher from the drain and empty it out.
Regular Hot Water When hair and other debris goes down the drain it can easily get stuck, causing clogs and blockages. You can add drain covers and hair catchers, but what about all of the debris that’s currently stuck in your plumbing? Pour a pot of boiling hot water down the drain to loosen up any blockages that may exist. However, the real secret is to keep your faucet running for a few minutes afterward to keep all of the dislodged debris moving down the drain.
Know When to Call Not all hair catchers and drain filters are going to work 100 percent of the time. Some debris and pieces of hair can sneak their way into your drains, causing a blockage over time. A telltale sign of these blockages is when water slowly drains from your shower or bathtub floor. When you find yourself standing ankle deep in water, call your local plumber as soon as possible to prevent this clog from turning into something much worse.
