How You’re Hurting Your Indoor Air
No person is ever trying to intentionally hurt their home’s indoor air quality. Unfortunately for you, there are things you do (without even realizing) that will have a negative effect on the air you and your family breathe in. Here’s how you’re hurting your indoor air:
1. Cleaning With Chemical Cleaners
Just because a commercial or the product packaging is advertising the best cleaner in the world, doesn’t mean it’s the safest to use. Many store-bought cleaners are made with harsh chemicals and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can linger in the air, bringing down the air quality. Cease buying these cleaners and opt for homemade cleaners like white vinegar and baking soda solutions.
2. Filling the House With the Wrong Scents
Whether you just cooked up a stinky meal or your home needs a homely scent, don’t go reaching for your usual air fresheners. Aerosol sprays are filled with carcinogens and VOCs that are terrible for one’s own health. Paraffin candles are should also be avoided, as they can lower indoor air quality. Instead, opt for an essential oil diffuser or soy candles for an emission-free air freshener.
3. Allowing the House to Become Too Humid
Air that’s too humid can be harmful to your body and home when it becomes a constant. High humidity will create a damp environment that will promote the growth of mold, mildew, and mites that will damage anything inside of your home, while also being harmful to breathe in. This can be especially bad for those with hardwood flooring, as high moisture can cause formaldehyde to release into the air, causing harm to your eyes, nose, and throat. A dehumidifier should be used in homes with high humidity levels – aim for a humidity level between 30 and 50 percent.
