LED Lighting and Why Your Home Needs It
As a homeowner, you have a responsibility to the environment (and your wallet) to lower your monthly energy usage. The easiest way you can save energy (and money) is by swapping out your current light bulbs for LED lighting. The list of benefits this type of lighting can offer is far better than any other bulb.
What Are LEDs? Light-emitting diode (LED) is a high-efficiency lighting option that uses 75 percent less energy than incandescent lighting. If every light bulb in the U.S. was replaced with LED bulbs, there would be a total savings of more than $30 billion. This is a realistic plan that could be seen in the next 10 years.
How Are LEDs Different?
- Source of the Light – LEDs within the bulb are actually the size of a small fleck of pepper (hard to believe, right?). In order to make the bright white light that LED light bulbs are known for, red, blue, and green LEDs are evenly mixed.
- Direction of the Light – Other light bulbs (like incandescent) need reflectors and diffusors to channel the light outwards. This can prevent all of the light from escaping the bulb, thus wasting energy and not giving off as much light as there is produced. Luckily, LEDs emit light in a specific direction which allows the makers of these bulbs to create a bright and efficient bulb!
- Less Heat – When light bulbs are on, they release their energy via light and heat. Incandescent bulbs emit 90 percent of their energy as heat, CFLs emit 80 percent of their energy as heat, and LEDs emit very little heat – almost none at all!
Why Your Home Needs LEDs Replacing all of your normal lighting with LEDs can drastically lower your energy bills each and every month. Not only will you save money on your bills, but since LED light bulbs last 25 times longer than normal bulbs, you’ll spend less money replacing them. Luckily, LEDs are available as individual light bulbs, under-cabinet lighting, recessed down-lighting, decorative string lighting, and commercial lighting if you also own a business.
