Natural Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality
Home is where you sleep, eat, and spend quality time with your family. With at least half of your day spent inside of your home (especially during the cooler months), shouldn’t you focus on having the best indoor air quality possible? Luckily, there are a few easy, natural things you can do to help you breathe easy!
Let Fresh Air In
The easiest thing you can do to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) is to simply – open the windows! Contrary to popular belief, indoor air has a lesser quality than that of outdoor air. Between high levels of carbon dioxide, dust, and any toxic chemicals from homeowner habits, your home’s air should be cleansed via 10 minutes of open windows per day.
Tidy Up on a Weekly Basis
If you keep slacking on household chores (make sure momma doesn’t find out), your home’s air quality will suffer. All of that dirt and dust that settles around your home can get kicked up and affect the air quality. Therefore, you need to be cleaning your home on a weekly basis. Dedicate some free time each week in order to vacuum carpets, mop floors, and dust surfaces.
Not Too High, But Not Too Low
Humidity within a home can be a fickle thing – sometimes it’s too high, while other times it can be too low. You want your indoor humidity level to fall within the 30 to 50 percent range. Too high of levels will result in mold growth, which can be detrimental to IAQ. On the other hand, too low of humidity can cause dry skin and even nose bleeds.
Pick the Right Plant
Did you know there are some plants that can remove toxins within the air? Rather than picking a houseplant strictly on its looks, find one that can help improve your home’s IAQ.
- English Ivy can filter our toxins such as benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and trichloroethylene.
- Florist’s Chrysanthemum and the Peace Lily can filter out the aforementioned toxins as well as ammonia.
- Just remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets and toddlers, as the leaves are toxic when ingested.
